Course by Michel Bierlaire / Moshe Ben-Akiva: Predicting Individual Behavior and Market Demand

February 11-15, 2024; EPFL, Lausanne, Switzerland
Early registration deadline February 2, 2024: transp-or-academia.epfl.ch/dca

Moshe Ben-Akiva (MIT) and Michel Bierlaire (EPFL) will be running a course on
discrete choice analysis to predict individual behavior and market demand and have asked SurveyEngine to notify our network.

This one-week program undertakes an in-depth study of discrete choice models and their applications. It provides participants with the practical tools necessary for applying new discrete choice techniques.

By examining actual case studies of discrete choice methods students will be familiarized with problems of data collection, model formulation, testing, and forecasting and will gain hands-on application experience by using readily available software to estimate and test discrete choice models from real databases. The course will emphasize applications of discrete choice methods to strategic and tactical marketing and to policy-related problems.
A limited number of scholarships are available to members of an academic institution (student, researcher or teaching staff).

Free Teaching Licenses

More information: surveyengine.com/teaching

Following a successful trial of SurveyEngine for teaching Choice Methods, we are glad to open the doors a little wider. The teaching licenses are currently at no cost and are a suitable complement to DCE and related methods courses or even general data collection. If you have an upcoming course of up to 100 students and want a single platform for experimental design, survey data collection and choice modelling – please visit https://surveyengine.com/teaching for more information.

A big thanks to Michiel Bliemer and the team of the Choice Modelling Academy; to Eline van den Broek-Altenburg at Vermont, Elisabetta Cherchi at Newcastle and Thomas Magor at the University of Queensland for featuring us in their recent courses and helping us iron out the logistics to make this possible.

Apollo modelling integration: Alpha testers needed

Become an Alpha Tester: lp.surveyengine.com/apollo-integration-experts

SurveyEngine is integrating the excellent Apollo R libraries developed by Prof. Stephane Hess and David Palma. The goals are to build a user interface to provide a gentle on-ramp for developing and running Apollo scripts, and to provide a high quality starting point for expert users to extend their analyses.

As with the Ngene integration last year, we believe this will reduce friction in the research lifecycle and allow researchers to spend more time analysing over fixing data inputs. We hope to gather a small number of Alpha testers from our network to help shape this important development, provide feedback and work directly with Ben White, Stephane Hess and Dr. Lutz Gehlen. Let us know if you are interested in contributing by return email or adding yourself to the list here: lp.surveyengine.com/apollo-integration-experts

Event: ISPOR Conference Europe 2023

Copenhagen, Denmark
12-15 November 2023

The ISPOR conferences are a valuable forum for learning about the unique needs of health preference research and its applications to health policy, regulatory decision making and market access. With Patient Preference studies gaining wider acceptance and endorsement from the EMA and the FDA has been an encouraging development, the ISPOR published task force reports provide valuable guidelines for preference research. We’re excited to see a number of sessions and posters that feature studies conducted with SurveyEngine.
ISPOR also is a great place to network: Julie Sebastian and Ludwig von Butler from our team will be in Copenhagen and we’re happy to meet our collaborators in health research in person at the conference – please send Ludwig an email to schedule a meeting there.

In case you cannot make it, you can watch two recent webinars sponsored by the ISPOR Health Preference Research Special Interest Group via a quick registration to the ISPOR website in the links below:

Preventing, Detecting, and Analyzing Data From Suspected Fraudulent Respondents in Online Surveys, with Examples From Health Preference StudiesPresenters: Prof. Deborah Marshall (University of Calgary), Carol Mansfield (RTI Health Solutions), Ludwig von Butler (SurveyEngine), Karen MacDonald (University of Calgary)

Event: Berlin Choice Colloquium

Thursday, 30 November at 4 pm, SurveyEngine Office Berlin
RSVP and more information: lp.surveyengine.com/choice-colloquium-berlin-nov2023

The Berlin Choice Colloquium is (finally) back! Please join us for an evening of conversation, drinks, and hors d’oeuvres to re-launch the Berlin Choice Colloquium. The following presentations are planned:

The Value of Security and National Defense

Dr. Jürgen Meyerhoff

To assess preferences for measures that strengthen security and defense as a public good, discrete choice experiments are a promising approach. For Germany, such a survey-based experiment reveals a strong preference for the installation of a European air defense system, but also for an increase in the troop size of the German military by 25% as well as the creation of a European army.

Spotting The Good, The Bad & The Ugly: Quality in online data collection

Ludwig Butler

With more surveys being conducted online the rise of bots and dishonest sample providers presents a challenge for data quality in online data collection. This is an opportunity to learn and discuss best practices and real time data quality alerting and how choice models are often the first line of defence.
